As the United States and Cuba normalize relations, it is reasonable to assume that Cuba will want to integrate more intensively into the global economy. However, for that to occur, numerous steps must be taken domestically. The most challenging of these endeavors, arguably, will be Cuba’s overhaul of its monetary policy; namely, converting its two currencies into one. Cuba has announced its intent to do away with the convertible peso, a step that will require revaluation of the Cuban peso. If unsuccessful, such a move can have adverse consequences. This paper analyzes Cuba’s monetary policy to determine whether the country’s future will be one of global integration or economic collapse.
